Evans Concrete has secured a £525,000 contract for work on the M1 widening programme between Junctions 25 and 28.
The bespoke precast concrete firm will be designing, supplying and installing precast retaining walls. The walls will enable the earth to be built up either side of the motorway so it can then be widened.
This contract is for the first phase of the project and includes 265 panels for the Junction 26 area, the largest of which will be 4m high and weigh eight tonnes.
The work has been awarded to Evans by MVM, a joint venture between Sir Robert McAlpine, Vinci and Morgan Est, for the Highways Agency.
Installation is due to begin in early June and is expected to take six weeks to complete. All the work will be taking place between 8pm and 8am and Evans will also be supplying the crane for the installation and all the enabling and propping works.
Garry McBride, chairman of Evans Concrete, said: “This is a very high profile contract for us. It’s great to be working so close to our base in Derbyshire, literally down the road, and on a project that will benefit the area as a whole. We hope to build a successful relationship with MVM and continue working on the widening scheme until it’s completion in 2010.”
Evans has worked on the M1 widening programme in the past, designing and manufacturing precast bridge abutment panels for two bridges at Junction 10. The company also supplied retaining wall panels when the M25 was widened in 2005.
